Gambit (2012) Movie Review

Gambit is a 2012 indie comedy crime film directed by Michael Hoffman, starring Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci. It is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name starring Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine. This version is written by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film premiered in the UK on 21 November 2012; it never received a theatrical release in the US, despite originally being planned for a 12 October 2012 release, and went straight-to-DVD on 25 April 2014 .

The plot follows British art curator Harry Deane (Firth), who decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss Lionel Shabandar (Rickman) by conning him into buying a fake Monet painting. To assist in the heist, Deane hires rowdy Texas cowgirl PJ Puznowski (Diaz) to help him fool the richest man in England. But as the plan begins to unravel, Deane finds he is falling in love with the rodeo queen, ensuing further complications.

The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the cast, but criticized the script and direction. The film has a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 54 reviews, with an average rating of 4.1/10. The site's consensus reads: "A waste of a fine cast, Gambit is a heist comedy that never quite delivers on its promise or premise." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 27 out of 100, based on 15 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".

Gambit is a film that tries to recapture the charm and wit of the original, but fails to do so. The Coen brothers' script is surprisingly dull and unfunny, lacking their usual flair and creativity. The direction by Hoffman is also uninspired and bland, failing to create any tension or excitement in the heist scenes. The film feels like a wasted opportunity, as it squanders the talents of its talented cast.

The only redeeming quality of the film is the cast, who try their best to make something out of the weak material. Firth and Diaz have some chemistry and charm as the mismatched pair, while Rickman and Tucci are amusing as the arrogant and eccentric villains. The film also features some cameo appearances by Cloris Leachman, Brodie Ross and Alex Macqueen.

Gambit is a disappointing remake that fails to live up to its potential. It is not a terrible film, but it is not a very good one either. It is a forgettable and mediocre comedy that does not do justice to its source material or its cast.
